Six things that make a unit feel bigger
Measure the tall stuff first
Mattresses, bookcases and fridges set the footprint. Everything else fills in around them.
Stand mattresses on edge
A queen set standing against a wall gives back about 15 square feet of floor.
Uniform boxes stack straighter
Two or three box sizes stack to the ceiling; twenty odd shapes waste a third of the unit.
Leave a center aisle
If you'll visit more than twice, keep an 18-inch walkway down the middle.
Heaviest on the bottom, back
Appliances and book boxes go against the back wall so the door end stays workable.
Label toward the aisle
Write on two sides and face the labels in. It saves an hour on the day you need one thing.

- What if I guess wrong?
- Transfers between units at the same facility are free and don't restart your lease. Managers do them the same day whenever another unit is open.
- How tall are the units?
- Most are 8 feet to the ceiling, and 10×20 and 10×30 units run 9 to 10 feet. That vertical space is where the extra room hides.
- Should I size up for a car?
- A sedan needs a 10×20 with the door clear. A truck or a long SUV wants a 10×30 if you also want to walk around it.
- Can a manager help me decide?
- That's the job. Bring a room-by-room list or a few photos and we'll open two or three doors so you can decide in person.
